Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sezzle affect your credit score?

Only if you turn on Sezzle Up. Regular Sezzle Pay in 4 is not reported to the credit bureaus, so it does not move your score up or down. Sezzle Up is the opt-in version, and when you enable it Sezzle reports your payment history to Equifax, TransUnion and Experian, where it can build credit or, if you fall behind, hurt it.

Does standard Sezzle build credit?

No. Plain Sezzle, the four-payment plan most people use at checkout, is not furnished to any bureau, so a perfect record on it builds nothing. If your goal is credit, you have to opt into Sezzle Up. Signing up for Sezzle and paying on time without Sezzle Up does nothing for your score.

Does Sezzle do a hard credit check?

No. Sezzle uses a soft check to decide your spending power, and a soft check does not affect your credit score and is not visible to other lenders. That is true whether or not you use Sezzle Up. The reporting that Sezzle Up turns on is about your payment history going out, not a hard inquiry coming in.

Can Sezzle hurt my credit score?

Yes, in two ways. If you are on Sezzle Up and a payment goes 30 days overdue, Sezzle reports that late mark and it can drag your score. Separate from that, any Sezzle balance you stop paying can be sold to a collection agency, and that collection lands on your report the normal way whether or not you ever used Sezzle Up.

Which bureaus does Sezzle report to?

For Sezzle Up users in the US, Sezzle reports to Equifax, TransUnion and Experian, and it also lists Innovis. It can take up to about 60 days from your first order after signing up for the account to appear on your credit report, so do not panic if you do not see it right away.

Is Sezzle Up worth it for building credit?

It can help a thin file, because it reports as an installment tradeline to the core credit file rather than a walled-off buy now, pay later section. But the effect is modest and it depends on you paying every plan on time. A secured card or a dedicated credit builder that reports to all three bureaus usually does more, and misses hurt here just like anywhere else.
