Frequently Asked Questions

What credit score do you need to refinance student loans?

There is no single legal minimum, but refinancing into a private loan usually takes a score around 650. Many lenders want the upper 600s or higher, and some require 680 or more. Earnest and SoFi both set a 650 floor. The best rates go to scores of 700 and up. Refinancing asks for stronger credit than the federal loans you started with required, because a private lender is now taking the risk.

Can I refinance student loans with a cosigner?

Yes. A creditworthy cosigner can bridge a thin credit file or a score below the lender's floor, and the cosigner's stronger profile often lowers your rate. Many lenders also offer a cosigner release after you make a set number of on-time payments, so the cosigner is not tied to the loan forever.

What are the minimum credit scores at SoFi and Earnest?

Both SoFi and Earnest set a minimum around 650 to refinance student loans. Meeting the floor gets you approved. It does not get you the lowest rate. The advertised best rates are reserved for scores in the 700s and up, paired with stable income and a low debt-to-income ratio.

Should I refinance federal student loans?

Be careful. Refinancing federal loans with a private lender means giving up federal protections for good: income-driven repayment, loan forgiveness programs, and generous deferment and forbearance. If you may need those safety nets, refinancing can cost you more than it saves. Refinancing private loans, or federal loans you are certain you will never need those protections on, is where it usually makes sense.

What else do refinance lenders look at besides my score?

Stable employment and income, a low debt-to-income ratio, and often a completed degree. A lender wants to see you can carry the new payment. Payment history and how much of your available credit you are using drive most of the score they pull in the first place, so cleaning those up before you apply moves both numbers at once.
