Florida filed more credit complaints than any state in 2025
Not per person, in total: 727,168 credit reporting complaints reached the CFPB from Florida in calendar 2025, more than Texas at 698,624 and far more than California at 440,292, states with equal or bigger populations. Per resident it comes to 30.99 per 1,000, more than double the national 14.05 and 3rd of 51 jurisdictions in our credit complaints by state study.
Only Georgia and Mississippi file at a higher per-person rate. The whole southeastern corridor runs hot, and Florida is its largest engine.
Before drawing conclusions, the study’s own caveat: complaint volume measures filing behavior, not error rates. One person filing the same account against all three bureaus counts three times. Florida’s enormous number tells you Floridians file a lot. Whether your report has a problem is answered only by your report.
What the CFPB data shows for Florida
Method: every credit reporting complaint in the CFPB’s public database, calendar 2025, divided by each state’s July 2025 Census population estimate. Same math for all 51 jurisdictions, no adjustments, published methodology.
Florida pairs its heavy filing with a below-average score: 704 against the national 713. Across all states, average score explains less than half the variance in complaint rates, so the study leaves the remaining gap honestly unexplained.
Florida credit repair law: light on registration, heavy on penalty
Florida’s regime has a strange shape: no state registry, but felony consequences.
The federal floor. The Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA, 15 U.S.C. 1679 and following) applies in every state: no charging before services are fully performed, a written contract, at least 3 business days to cancel, no untrue or misleading claims, and a required written disclosure that you can dispute inaccurate information in your credit report yourself, directly with the bureaus, free.
The Florida layer. Credit service organizations are governed by Florida Statutes 817.7001 through 817.706, inside the criminal fraud chapter:
- No registration or license exists. Florida keeps no roster of credit repair companies. There is nothing to look up, which shifts the vetting to you.
- Advance fees only with a bond and trust account. Under 817.7005, a company may not collect before full performance unless it maintains a $10,000 surety bond and a trust account.
- A 5-day cancellation right. Under 817.704, you may cancel until midnight of the fifth day after the transaction, refund due within 10 days.
- Violations are a third degree felony. Under 817.705, breaking this law is not a paperwork problem, it is a crime, and 817.706 makes any waiver of your rights void.
So in Florida the question to ask any company is simple: where is your bond, where is your trust account, and why are you asking for money before the work is done? And as everywhere in America, fixing your own credit is legal, free, and requires no one.
The average credit score in Florida
Florida’s average FICO Score is 704 as of September 2025, per Experian, down three points from 707 a year earlier. The national average fell two points to 713 in the same year, its first annual decline since 2013.
Nine points under the national average, in the state with the country’s biggest complaint pile. Two facts, presented side by side without a causal story, because we measured and could not prove one. The full ranking is in our average credit score by state breakdown.
What this means if you live in Florida
- Pull all three reports free at AnnualCreditReport.com, weekly if you like.
- Read them line by line. In the state that files the most complaints in America, the base rates say: check everything. Our common credit report errors guide lists what usually breaks.
- Use the FCRA yourself. You can contact each bureau about inaccurate information directly, at no cost. The full sequence is in our step-by-step guide.
- Or automate the reading. Credit Booster AI pulls all three reports, flags what is costing you, and lays out the plan. Works in all 50 states, Florida included. 7-day free trial, plans from $9.99 a month.
Outcome honesty, the kind Florida enforces with a felony statute: nobody can promise a specific score jump. Cleaning up genuine errors commonly moves scores 30 to 60 points. Accurate negative items cannot be removed by anyone, whatever they charge.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is credit repair legal in Florida?
Yes. Repairing your own credit is always legal and free, and paid credit service organizations may operate under the federal Credit Repair Organizations Act plus Florida Statutes 817.7001 through 817.706. Florida is unusual in how it enforces the rules: a violation of its credit service organization law is a third degree felony.
Can a Florida credit repair company charge me upfront?
Only if it holds both a $10,000 surety bond and a trust account. Without those, Florida Statute 817.7005 bans charging or receiving money before the promised services are fully performed. A large upfront fee from an unbonded operator is a statutory violation, not a style choice.
Can I cancel a credit repair contract in Florida?
Yes. Florida law gives you until midnight of the fifth day after the date of the transaction to cancel, with a refund due within 10 days. The federal Credit Repair Organizations Act separately guarantees at least 3 business days everywhere, and any waiver of these rights is void.
Why does Florida file so many credit complaints?
We do not fully know, and our study says so plainly. Florida filed 30.99 complaints per 1,000 residents in 2025, third highest, and 727,168 in total, the most of any state. Average credit score correlates with complaint rates but explains less than half of the state gaps, so we publish the numbers without inventing the cause.
What is the average credit score in Florida?
704, per Experian data as of September 2025, nine points below the national average of 713. Florida fell three points from 707 a year earlier, faster than the national two-point decline, which was the first drop in the US average since 2013.
